CHARACTER BREAKDOWN / PROJECT NEEDS

Ren McCormack (Lead, 15-19, Tenor-High G, Heavy Dance) Although Ren is seen as a young rebel always getting into trouble, he must also be witty (good comedic timing). Ren is a cut-up, a joker who enjoys a good time. Lately, though, his fun-loving attitude has taken on a tone of desperation, as he tries too hard to convince the world – and himself – that his father’s desertion hasn’t wounded him as deeply as it has. He expresses this pain through his quirky sarcasm and by dancing.

Reverend Shaw Moore (Lead, 40-60, Baritone-High D Flat, No Dance) Reverend Moore is the most powerful figure in Beaumont. He is a stern, strict, solemn man with a booming voice who runs the town with an iron fist. However he also has a tender side and is struggling with the loss of his son. (Singing is more traditional musical theatre than other characters).

Ariel Moore (Lead, 15-19, Mezzo-High D, Heavy Dance) She is the preacher’s daughter. At first glimpse it would appear that she is the perfect girl; beautiful, perky, energetic. But look closer and you will find that she is her father’s worst nightmare. She is strong-willed, sharp-tongued, yet vulnerable.

Vi Moore (Supporting, 38-50, Mezzo – High C Sharp, No Dance) The strong-willed preacher’s wife who holds the moral fiber of Beaumont in her upright stance. She feels she is losing her husband and daughter and doesn’t know what to do. She ultimately is responsible for holding her family together after its terrible loss. (Singing is more traditional musical theatre than other characters).

Rusty (Supporting, 15-19, Mezzo – High E Flat, Comedic, Dance) Ariel’s best friend. Rusty may come off as sassy and self-assured, but, in many ways she is the most deeply romantic character in the story. She truly believes that she and Willard were meant to be together. However, they are so inept about expressing themselves, that it takes Ren – and a little time on the dance floor – to ultimately bring that about.

Willard Hewitt (Supporting, 15-19, Baritone/Tenor-High F, Comedic, Dance) A simple country bumpkin with a warm heart and a big crush. Willard is not dumb. He is a gentle soul with quick fists, which are his defense against a world that he often has trouble comprehending. Willard just hasn’t had anyone come along to puncture his macho belligerence – until Ren arrives. After that, the humor in the character of Willard derives from his gradual, innocent and giddy discovery of the new worlds that Ren opens up to him. He quickly befriends Ren and shows him the rules and regulations of living in Beaumont.

Ethel McCormack (Supporting, 40-55, Mezzo-High C, No Dance) Ren’s mother. She is a strong willed, outspoken single parent who would do anything for her son. (Singing is more traditional musical theatre than other characters).

Chuck Cranston (Supporting, 15-19, Tenor-High B, Dancing a Plus) A motorcycle-riding, foul-mouthed, leather-wearing, trailer park product who takes one look at Ren and realizes that there’s only room for one bad boy in this town. He is dating the one girl that Ren obviously has a crush on, Ariel.

Urleen (Cameo, 15-19, Mezzo Belt, Comedic, Dance) Ariel’s friend. The smart one of the group.

Wendy Jo (Cameo, 15-19, Mezzo Belt, Comedic, Dance) Ariel’s friend. Doesn’t say much but sure knows a lot about Beaumont and the town rules.

Lyle & Travis (15-19, Tenors, Some Dance Preferred) Chuck’s friends.
