Sunday, March 28, 3 p.m. |
Auditions will be on a walk-in basis during the dates specified above. Auditions will consist of readings from the script and a 1-2 minute prepared song. Performers should bring a taped/CD accompaniment (no voices) or sheet music in the correct key for a provided accompanist. No a cappella singing.
It is very helpful if you can prepare your music by copying it to single sheet(s) of paper and attaching the individual pages to a file folder or cardboard so that the music stays open and upright when placed on the piano. Music chosen should reflect your vocal range, ability and be age appropriate. Song selection should be memorized.
On March 27 and 28, the dance routine will be taught following the vocal and acting audition. After a short learning period, auditioners will audition the dance routine for the Choreographer. Dress comfortably so you can move around easily. Please be aware that there will not be time to change clothes between the vocal and dance segments.
If you are away at college or cannot audition for some other reason, the directors would love to see your audition on DVD or VHS tape, or via email or other electronic means. Audition videos should include a 1-2 minute prepared song, a 1 minute monologue, and an example of dance or movement. Presentations should be less than 5 minutes. Videotapes/DVD’s must be received by Kiwanis no later than 5 p.m. on March 19 (material will not be returned.) Segments may also be emailed to musical@eskiwanis.org or uploaded online just email us and let us know where.
Footloose the musical was inspired by the 1984 Kevin Bacon film and includes many of the same songs such as "Holding Out for a Hero," "Let's Hear It for the Boy," "Almost Paradise," and of course the title tune, “Footloose”. |

Like the movie, the musical follows the story of Ren who moves with his mother to a small town where dancing is prohibited by law. Ren ends up at odds with the town and especially the local minister, Reverend Moore, when Ren gets involved with Moore’s daughter, Ariel. Each of the main characters is struggling with tragic circumstances, but eventually they each find healing and forgiveness. The audience should find all of the characters likable and sympathetic. The musical is powerful and moving.
This show requires a large ensemble (a chorus of dancers and a chorus of singers). It also involves the casting of many lead roles that require strong acting and singing skills and for some roles strong dancing skills as noted below. There are also a number of smaller roles with speaking and solo parts.

To be considered for ANY role, performers must be willing to commit to a five week rehearsal schedule in addition to the performance dates. Typically, rehearsals are Monday - Friday nights, from approximately 7 - 9:30 p.m. All rehearsals will be held at the Excelsior Springs High School, either in the theatre or another performance area.
The Kiwanis Club is dedicated to giving our audiences the very best in theatre entertainment. This requires a tremendous amount of time and commitment on the part of every performer. Attendance at all rehearsals is extremely important. Before you decide to audition, please seriously consider any potential schedule conflicts or other performance opportunities that may interfere with your commitment to this production. Please check the production calendar for conflicts and list those conflicts on your audition form. We can work around many conflicts, if we know of them prior to casting. Performers will be allowed three absences from scheduled rehearsals, only if the Stage Manager is notified in advance. Performers who are absent additional days or who are frequently tardy will likely be re-cast. The producer, director and stage manager will consider any extenuating circumstances. Young people who must have their parents permission to participate, and must rely on them for transportation, will be asked to sign the youth contract so that everyone involved understands the level of commitment they are agreeing to. If you know transportation is going to be a problem, please let us know in advance so that we can arrange suitable rides with other members of the cast.
To assist employed teenagers, upon request, we will send a letter detailing the production and dates of rehearsal and performances, your commitment and requesting their cooperation in adjusting your work schedule so that you can participate. For this cooperation they may receive a 2-line ad in the program as they wish it to read, and 2 tickets to a performance.
